- What is a wet belt and why is it different from a normal cambelt?
- A wet belt (or oil-bath cambelt) runs inside the engine and is lubricated by the oil, rather than sitting dry at the front of the engine. If it degrades, tiny rubber particles can block the oil pump pickup and starve the engine of oil, which can cause serious damage.
- Which engines have a wet belt?
- Wet belts are most common on the Ford EcoBoost 1.0 petrol engine and the PSA/Vauxhall PureTech 1.2 petrol engine, used across several Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall and DS models. If you are not sure whether your car has one, we can check for you.
- What are the signs of a failing wet belt?
- A rattling or ticking noise from the front of the engine, especially on a cold start, is a common early sign. Rubber particles showing up in the oil or on the filter are another. If you notice either, book a check before the belt fails completely.
