What Is a Wet Belt and Why Does It Fail?

19 May 2026 · 4 min read min read

Wet Belt Explained

A wet belt does the same job as a traditional timing belt — keeping the crankshaft and camshaft in sync — but instead of running dry outside the engine, it sits inside the engine housing, immersed in engine oil.

Manufacturers introduced wet belts to reduce friction and improve fuel efficiency compared with a timing chain. In principle it is a good idea; in practice, several popular wet belt engines have shown a tendency to shed rubber material into the oil earlier than expected.

Which Engines Use Them

Wet belt designs are most associated with Ford's 1.0 EcoBoost engine and the PSA/Vauxhall 1.2 PureTech (also used across some Peugeot, Citroën and Vauxhall models). If you drive one of these, it is well worth knowing whether your car has one.

Not every small three-cylinder petrol has a wet belt, so if you are unsure, we can check your engine code and confirm for you rather than you having to guess from the model name alone.

Why They Fail Early

Because the belt sits in oil, small pieces of rubber can shed over time and circulate through the engine's oil galleries and pickup. This can block oil flow to critical components, and in the worst cases lead to serious engine damage — sometimes with very little warning.

Short journeys, infrequent oil changes, and oil that has degraded past its interval all seem to make the problem worse, since the belt sits in that oil continuously rather than only during operation.

Protecting Your Engine in Bilston

The best protection is regular oil changes with the correct grade of oil, and having the belt inspected and replaced within — or ideally before — the manufacturer's interval, rather than waiting for symptoms like rattling or a dashboard warning.
