5 Signs Your Clutch Is Slipping

What Clutch Slip Feels Like
A slipping clutch fails to fully transfer engine power to the wheels. The classic symptom is the engine revving higher than it should for the speed you are actually gaining — most noticeable pulling away, going up hills, or accelerating hard to overtake.
It can start subtly, just a slight delay between pressing the accelerator and the car responding, before becoming more obvious as the clutch plate wears further.
High Biting Point and Revs
A rising biting point — where you have to lift the clutch pedal much higher than you used to before the car starts to move — is one of the earliest and most reliable signs of wear. It happens gradually, so it is easy to adjust to without noticing.
Alongside this, you may notice the engine needing more revs than usual to move off smoothly, or the car struggling to pull away on an incline without stalling or bogging down.
Burning Smell
A burning smell, similar to hot brakes, is a strong sign the clutch plate is slipping and generating excess friction heat. This is most likely to show up after hard acceleration, hill starts, or stop-start traffic.
If you notice this smell regularly rather than as a one-off, it is worth getting the clutch checked before it fails completely, ideally somewhere without a queue of traffic behind you.
How Long a Slipping Clutch Lasts
Once a clutch starts slipping, it will not fix itself and typically gets worse over weeks or months rather than lasting indefinitely — how quickly depends on your driving style and how the car is used. Continuing to drive on a badly slipping clutch can eventually leave you unable to move off at all.
