How Often Should I Service My Car? Bilston Service Intervals

The Three Types of Service: Interim, Full and Major
Most manufacturers recommend a full service every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Some newer cars can go longer — check your handbook. Between full services, high-mileage drivers often need an interim service at six months or 6,000 miles for extra peace of mind.
A major service is the big one — usually every 24 months or 24,000 miles. It is the deepest check, with spark plugs, filters, and system inspections that catch wear early. At Millfields Auto Services in Bilston, we follow your manufacturer schedule exactly so your warranty stays valid.
What is an Interim Service?
An interim service is the quick one. Oil and filter get changed, fluids are topped up, and we do about 25 core safety checks: lights, wipers, brakes, tyres, and steering. It takes about an hour or two. Perfect if you drive a lot of miles or want your car checked more often between full services.
What is a Full Service?
A full service covers about 40 checks. Everything in the interim service, plus we replace the air filter, inspect the pollen filter, check hoses and belts, and dive deeper into brakes and suspension. A full service typically takes two to three hours. This is what most drivers need once a year.
What is a Major Service?
The major service is the comprehensive one — up to 60 checks covering everything. We replace pollen filters, spark plugs, and fuel filters when due; check the cooling system, clutch, transmission, and wheel bearings; and give your car a complete health review. Major services can take three to four hours or longer, but they catch problems before they get expensive.
Check Your Handbook First
The best place to find your service schedule is your car's handbook. Manufacturers publish exact intervals for petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles.
