DPF Warning Light On? What Diesel Drivers Should Know

5 May 2026 · 4 min read min read

What the DPF Does

A diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps soot from your exhaust so it does not pass out into the air. Over time, that soot builds up inside the filter and needs to be burned off in a process called regeneration, which restores the filter to working condition.

Every modern diesel has one, and it is a legal requirement — a car with a removed or damaged DPF will fail its MOT. Looking after it properly avoids both the warning light and a costly failure down the line.

Why the Light Comes On

The DPF light usually comes on when soot has built up beyond the level the car can burn off during normal driving. This is very common on diesels used mainly for short, low-speed trips, where the exhaust never gets hot enough to trigger a proper regeneration.

It can also appear if a regeneration cycle has been interrupted — for example, by switching the engine off partway through a motorway journey — or if there is a genuine fault with a sensor or the filter itself.

Regeneration Explained

A passive regeneration happens automatically at motorway speeds, where exhaust temperatures are high enough to burn off soot without you noticing. An active regeneration is triggered by the car's computer and needs a sustained drive of 15–20 minutes at a decent speed to complete.

If your journeys are mostly short and slow, try a longer run on a dual carriageway when the light first appears — this often clears it. If the light stays on or turns solid rather than flashing, it needs diagnosing rather than driving through.

When Cleaning or Replacement Is Needed

If regeneration alone does not clear the light, the filter may need a proper clean using diagnostic equipment, or in more serious cases, replacement. Ignoring the light risks the filter blocking completely, which can cause the car to go into limp mode.

At Millfields Auto Services in Bilston, we diagnose the actual cause before recommending a clean or a replacement, so you are not paying for more than the car needs. Call us on 01902 492116 or book online.
