Why Does My Car Judder When Braking?

What Juddering Means
Juddering under braking is a pulsing or shuddering sensation, usually felt through the brake pedal, the steering wheel, or the whole car. It happens because something in the braking system is no longer making smooth, even contact as you slow down.
It is easy to notice but the cause is not always obvious from the driver's seat, which is why it is worth having it checked rather than guessing — some causes are a simple fix, others affect your ability to stop safely.
Warped Discs
The most common cause is warped or uneven brake discs. Heat from hard or repeated braking, especially on long descents, can cause a disc to distort very slightly. That uneven surface makes the pad grip and release unevenly as the disc spins, which you feel as a pulse through the pedal.
Warping tends to develop gradually, so the judder often gets worse over weeks rather than appearing overnight. Discs that have warped usually need resurfacing or replacing — there is no reliable way to straighten them back out.
Worn Pads and Other Causes
Unevenly worn brake pads, a sticking caliper, or a build-up of rust and debris on the disc surface can all cause similar juddering. Steering wheel shake specifically under braking often points to the front discs, while pedal pulsing can involve either end of the car.
Loose wheel bearings or an out-of-round wheel can occasionally mimic braking judder too, which is another reason a proper inspection is worth more than a guess.
Getting Brakes Checked in Bilston
Juddering brakes are not something to leave — worn or warped components affect your stopping distance, and MOT testers check discs and pads closely. Do not wait for a fail notice if you have already noticed the symptoms.
