Burning Smell From Your Car? Common Causes
8 July 2026 · 5 min read min read
Rubber or Belt Smells
A smell like burning rubber can mean a drive belt is slipping, a hose is touching a hot part of the engine, or something has simply got trapped near the exhaust — a carrier bag or leaves are more common than you would think.
This is usually one of the less serious causes, but a slipping belt can affect the alternator, water pump or power steering depending on which one it is, so it is worth a quick look rather than ignoring it.
Electrical Burning
A sharper, more acrid smell — closer to burning plastic than rubber — often points to an electrical fault, such as an overheating wire, a failing motor, or a short circuit somewhere in the wiring loom.
This is one to take seriously. Electrical faults can, in rare cases, lead to a fire, so if you smell burning plastic and cannot immediately identify a harmless cause, stop and get it checked before driving further.
Brakes and Clutch
A burning smell after heavy or prolonged braking is usually just hot brakes cooling down, which is normal after a steep descent. But if it happens during ordinary driving, it can mean a caliper is sticking and the pad is dragging on the disc constantly.
A similar smell from a slipping clutch tends to show up after hill starts or hard acceleration — see our clutch slipping guide for the full signs to look out for.
Oil on a Hot Engine
If oil has leaked onto a hot part of the engine, such as the exhaust manifold, it burns off with a distinctive smell and sometimes a wisp of smoke from under the bonnet. This points to a leak that is worth tracing and fixing before it gets worse.
Check your oil level and look underneath the car for drips as a first step, but do not rely on a visual check alone — some leaks only show up under load.
When To Stop Driving
If the smell is strong, gets worse, or is accompanied by smoke, warning lights, or a change in how the car handles, pull over safely and switch off rather than continuing to your destination.
